Raku Black and Cream Vase

"Raku" is a traditional Japanese pottery technique characterized by rapid firing and quick cooling, which result in cracks. These unpredictable cracks create aesthetic appeal and depth. Raku firings are rare and expensive. Unlike regular kiln firings, which can happen in any pottery studio, raku firings are carried out only in the open air and require very specialized skills, as well as physical effort. I drive two hours to the countryside every time I need to conduct a raku firing, staying there almost all day.

The high breakage rate and the difficulty of achieving good results with raku also contribute to its expense. However, it is worth it, as each piece comes out completely unique and unpredictable.
